As a freelancer, I offer services that fall under three broad categories.
- Popular science writing
- Data analysis and visualisation
- Climate Services
1. Popular science writing
I enjoy communicating scientific findings, whether from my own or other people’s research.
I adapt my writing style to the intended audience, which could be other scientists within or outside my areas of expertise or the general public.
Carefully designing explanatory scientific diagrams is central to successful science communication, as illustrated in this diagram showing areas of subsurface ocean ventilation.
2. Data analysis and visualization
I like the challenge of analyzing large datasets and producing graphics that help visualize the most salient results coming out of the analysis of these datasets.
I am especially fond of producing maps, such as this one displaying the carbon emissions intensity of electricity generation in Canada, the USA and Mexico around year 2020.
3. Climate services
Countries, provinces, states, territories, and municipalities need tailor-made climate products to help them make informed decisions to better adapt to a changing climate.
During my climate scientist career with the Government of Canada, I provided scientific advice on the impacts of climate change on Canada’s fisheries and coastal communities. I twice had the privilege to represent Canada at IPCC meetings for the approval of summaries for policy makers: first in 2019 for IPCC’s special report on the ocean and cryosphere, and in 2021 for IPCC’s AR6 report on the physical science basis of climate change.
In 2019, I wrote a popular science article on the projected impacts of climate change in Toronto, Canada’s largest city. These climate change projections were based on IPCC’s fifth assessment report (AR5).
